          This district lies in the middle of the Tamilnadu state. One of the ancient regions that talk about the historic period. This district is surrounded by Tanjore, Pudukottai, Dindigul, Salem and Coimbatore district and stands the fourth largest city in the state. This is the district headquarters. The city is famous for the Rockfort’ which is said to be found over a period of 3000 million years ago. Apart from this monument you have several churches, Mosques, Colleges and missions dating back to the 1760s, which tells the stories of the historic periods.

Rock fort
          The very oldest landmark of the state situated at the heart of the city and the oldest rock formations in the world, a natural element as a genre to the city. Being prominent the place consist of a hill temple dedicated to vinayaka and half way up is the Sri Thayumanaswamy Temple, dedicated to lord Siva. A worth place to have an eagle’s eye view on the city. During the Tamil month ‘karthigai’ the hill is enlightened with oil lamp (traditional lamp) is a gracious sight in the city. It is said that there is a rock-cut cave that connects an underground path to Tanjore ‘big temple’, which is an admiring efforts of our ancestors.

Tiruvanaikkaval (7 km)
          This is near srirangam the place located on the Cauvery riverbeds. Here, the famous temple of Lord Siva and the image Siva lingam is almost submerged in the water which flows from a subterranean spring during sanctorum.
Srirangam (5 km)
          This is Asia’s famous temple for the construction of its tower and front elevation. It is located as in an island, bordered by the river Cauvery and the tributary kollidam. This temple in dedicated to lord Vishnu as ‘Rangathanathar avatar’. The famous event is “Sorkkavaasal” in a belief that people trust that by seeing this they attain heaven after they leave earth.
Grand Annaicut (kallanai)
          It is said to be the oldest dam of the earth, only in this world, built by a great emperor named karikal cholan during the 2nd century. Even today it is a spot of picnic and a major water irrigation dam, the British later strengthened it and today it is maintained well for people to picnic.
Mukkombu (18 km)
          This is another major picnic spot is Trichy. You have, a children park with games and joy train and a green location to relax. It is a dam for Cauvery and kollidam. Where it gets separated. During rainy seasons fishing and bathing at he riverbed is a fun for the localites.
Vayaloor (8 km)
          A famous Murugan Temple in located here.
Samayapuram (20 km)
          The temple is famous for its Goddess Mari Amman. People of the state, walk by foot from various places to worship will be a belief and a sign of spirituality.
Viralimalai (30 km)
          This is a hit tock situated on the way to Madurai from trichy. This place is a famous peacock sanctuary. Atop the hill there is a temple dedicated to Lord Subramanya and is a famous pilgrimage center of this district.
Puliancholai (75 km)
          Situated at the foothills of Kollimalai. A beautiful rocky place to picnic and fun.
Thuraiyur
          The Prasanna Venkatachalapathi temple at the top of Perumalmalai (3 km) from here is famous.
Srinivasanallur (50 km)
          This spot is situated on the banks of Cauvery River and it has the finest early sculptures of Cholan periods will be a fabulous visit to the tourist.
Gunaseelam (16 km)
          It is believed that the Prasanna Venkatesa Perumal temple has a power to heal evil possessed and mentally ill.
Thiru Paingilie (20 km)
          Here, some temples dates back to 640 AD such as ‘the Viswanathar Temple, known as Neelivaneswarar temple, the soundarieeswarar shrines, Athikara vallavar (someskander) the rock hewn Siva shrine etc. are the oldest serene places to be visited.
Thiruvengoinmalai
          This is a temple of Maragathaleswara swami and also known as Maragathamalai, Thenkailayam, Sivasakthimalai, MalaiKovil and Erattrai malai.
